Commercial agriculture generates large volumes of co-products, by-products and waste streams that need to be taken care of both in environmental and economic terms. To contextualise; the waste produced per day by one dairy cow is equal to that of 20-40 people.


The main challenge facing commercial agriculture is that the importation of large quantities of nutrients in animal feed disturbs the nutrient balance of an area. Local disposal opportunities soon get exhausted giving rise to additional operating costs.
